It was a busy day on Friday, Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce held his first proper press conference of the summer with the Championship kick-off against Hull city ticking ever nearer on Monday evening and he also announced our skipper for the coming campaign.

No great surprises with his choice in reality. With the armband switching from James Chester to John Terry for the season of 2017/18, with his departure as his contract expired plenty thought it would switch right back to our Welsh international and that’s exactly what’s happened.
The only fly in the ointment seemed to be the never-ending speculation linking him with a move to Stoke City this window given our precarious financial position, but I think it’s safe to say that for those fans who were confident he wasn’t going anywhere following the takeover by Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, this seals it.
After the summer we’ve had nobody is going to hand him the armband and then flog him before the permanent window shuts – we aren’t that daft surely.

I believe he agreed to it. JT never requested it. If you think about it, captaining next to the best CB in modern English history is a bit of a weird one
