According to Wales Online, Leroy Fer is no closer to signing a new deal with Swansea City which could see him leaving the club this summer. Aston Villa were close to procuring his signature in January, but issues with his hamstring and a reluctance to make the move from the Liberty Stadium led to teammate Tom Carroll arriving at Villa Park on deadline day instead.

Villa have a slim hope of signing Fer when the season comes to a close, however, as he could soon be available on a free transfer. Unfortunately, the Netherlands international still views the Midlands outfit as a sideways move in his career and would prefer a return to the Premier League. Dean Smith may need to attain promotion to lure Fer over the summer.

The 29-year-old has made 26 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring and creating seven goals. Fer has captained the side for the majority of the campaign, but he’s spent the last two months sidelined with injury. Villa are in need of midfield reinforcements as Mile Jedinak & Glenn Whelan could be on their way out of the club in June, but Fer might be a difficult acquisition.
