Ashley Young on Houllier, England, life, and orange jellybabies…

Yes it’s a slow news day with everybody seemingly focusing on as many possible and contradictory rumours they can find relating to Gerard Houllier’s future employment status, but that hasn’t stopped Ash from saying he’s focusing on England.

Speaking to the Independant Ash said he had no idea what was going on at Villa with regards to the Houllier rumours as he was fully focused on shining again for England.

‘To be honest, I’ve not heard anything out of the club, officially. I’m away with England and that’s what I’m concentrating on.

With further cat like investigative powers, Ash was asked whether he wanted Houllier to stay.

‘Of course, he’s done great. It’s been a difficult season, but fingers crossed things can get sorted and he’ll get back to full health.’

As you can see, the interview was on a roll, so Ash was probed diligently about his own future.

‘I’ve said that I’ll speak to the manager and the chairman at the end of the season. I’ve got to concentrate on this game and we’ll see what happens when I talk to them.’

Sadly the journalist didn’t probe why the season hasn’t yet come to an end in Ash’s mind, but I think all the thought went into the previous questions.

I would quote his answers in relation to the England game, but I can’t be bothered – maybe I’ll type something after it’s finished…in August.

Oh before I forget, Stewart Downing added.

‘We were told at the end of the season he was coming back. He’s been good for me personally and if he stays then brilliant, if he goes I wish him all the best.’

The probing questions were out in force for Downing aswell, who was then asked if Houllier’s fate would have any baring on his own contact shenanigans.

‘I have enjoyed working with O’Neill, MacDonald, McAllister and Gerard Houllier so it doesn’t influence my decision at all if he stays or goes.’

I’m off to watch All The Presidents Men.
