Positives & Regret For Vlaar

Skipper Ron Vlaar has said that Villa can take many positives from the scoreless draw with Cardiff City on Tuesday, but everyone in the dressing room felt disappointment after the game because they feel they really should’ve taken all three points from the match given the chances we had in the second half.

Vlaar’s own performance having returned from a hamstring injury was the subject of much praise during and both after the game, but he was frustrated that we couldn’t find the elusive opener during the evening as one goal really would’ve been enough to give us all three points as we now head into our little fixture break and trip to Portugal.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, our captain said.

‘We got a point but I think we should have had three. In the beginning we had some problems, they hit the post and the crossbar but we never really got in trouble overall. In the second half we played a lot better and we got some good chances.’

Echoing the thoughts of manager Paul Lambert, Vlaar goes on to credit the individual performance of their goalkeeper for some of the saves he was pulling off, especially the one right at the end from Andi Weimann.

‘We should have won, but to get a clean sheet is good. The team spirit and team effort was really good. That’s where it all starts.’

Problem is it should’ve started back in August, we are near the middle of February and four points clear of the drop zone. We put a fantastic run together this time last season to save our embarrassing blushes, and they always say lightning doesn’t strike twice but many of us feel Zeus is taking aim, having a sly little giggle and getting ready to…best I finish there really isn’t it.

Vlaar to his credit, does accept that though.

‘I don’t think we have to be in trouble this year but the result haven’t been good over the last couple of weeks. We definitely need some points.’

Have to hope these ‘positives’ and half performances really do come good, as four points is nothing in football, when there are so many games left to play and points both on offer but also to lose.
