It’s been quite a surprising summer for Aston Villa given the raft of signings we’ve made as our preparations for our Premier League return continue, and it’s, of course, world’s apart from where we were 12 months ago as the speculation linking us with Manchester City’s Douglas Luiz ably demonstrates. However, claims that we are now linked with Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon seem a little greedy.

Sessegnon has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus, Paris Saint-German and RB Leipzig on the rumour mill so far this summer, but given his talent and the fact he only has 12 months left on his contract, the sensible money is on a Craven Cottage departure this summer for around the £25million mark or, if it goes to January, he’s off on a free abroad.

The Telegraph began linking us with a move for him at the end of last week, stating that we had ‘made enquiries’ alongside others now.

I’d love this to be true and to come off given his talent, even though he struggled in the top flight last year – but I just can’t see it. We’ve signed Matt Targett for the defensive role and we have wing options already – so although Sessegnon definitely ticks the boxes our transfer policy would require, this seems too much like the media have cottoned onto how much we’ve spent so far this summer already and are now including ‘Aston Villa’ by default.

I hope I’m wrong though.
