With long standing speculation linking Aston Villa with an interest in Southampton left back Matt Targett, on Sunday we saw claims that a deal was now effectively done and on Monday morning we announced his capture.

The 23-year-old makes the switch for an undisclosed fee but it’s believed the deal breaks down as £14million up front with the deal rising to £17million with additional clauses.

With 21 appearances to his name last season, most fans will know him from his spell with Fulham when they pipped up to Play-Off promotion the other year, but the former England Under 21 international has decent top flight experience as well with 63 career appearances in total to his name having made his debut back in 2014.

Speaking to the Official Site as his signing was announced, head coach Dean Smith was naturally delighted with his capture.

“We’re very pleased to have Matt join us. He’s a player we have been looking at for a considerable amount of time. He fits our criteria of being a young player with experience of playing in the Premier League and having the potential to develop further. He will help make us a stronger defensive unit and we are all looking forward to working with him.”

I think most will be happy with this one!
