Stennyvilla believes that now is as good a time as any to posit a review of where we think Aston Villa are after the pre season games given our only aim this year is promotion back to the Premier League.

Instead of waiting until May, I think it’s time for a review now, as lots of fans, whether in reality, or courtesy of AVTV, will have seen all of our pre-season games.

My ‘review’, (or is it a preview of the season to come), in the typical ‘what have we learnt so far’ style is:

1 – The defence looks sorted, and even though I liked Baker, it is understandable with Samba, and the younger back-up, why with FFP he was sold.

2 – Midfield creativity, in terms of providing balls to feet and real goal scoring opportunities for our strikers, remains dire. Hogan will never succeed if the best we can do is randomly lob the ball across into the penalty area. O’Hare looks a breath of fresh air.

3 – Individually, of the new signings, Terry, Samba, and Whelan all look good and may help turn our season around. With Kodja and Jedinak almost like new players to come back too, the result is my pre-season pessimism has developed a bit of a hopeful lining.

4 – With regard to last season’s squad, big question marks – can Andre Green with his undoubted pace add any end product, because he will not succeed in my books until he shows something more. Can Hourihane, Lansbury and Grealish do it? Can Gabby justify a final chance he doesn’t really deserve?

5 – Potential player of the Season – Whelan.

Conclusion:

Get creative, and we can be up at the top end of a very competitive Championship. If not, even with the upper hand in games, just a couple of decent opposition attacks will again be sucker punches that will be enough to beat us, and mid-table beckons again, with Bruce on his way by Xmas.
