Nicky Shorey has told the official site that former Reading and Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell is the man to watch for Villa fans next season. He said: ‘I don’t think we have seen the best of him yet. Last season was a strange one for Siddy, he was out injured for long periods and picked up niggles here and there.’ Adding, ‘Hopefully he will have a good pre-season and then we’ll see the best of him and I think everyone will be impressed with how well he can do. Siddy just keeps on going. He’ll be fine. There’s no worries on that count. He can play in a three or a two – that’s what he’s done in the past. He’s just an all round good midfielder and I’m sure he’ll show that before too long.’

Vital Villa asked, following the comments last week on Michael Owen and Gabby Agbonlahor … I don’t know if it is the heat or what but I’m boring myself here… is this what you lot have to put up with all the time?!??! (Don’t answer that, I have a delicate nature!) Where was I? Oh yes, the poll asked: Owen v Gabby? Sadly not in a fight off, that would have been more fun! Anyway, 58% voted that we need both of them. Must admit I’d have thought Gabby, at just 22, could learn a lot from Owen who has a wealth of experience and when fit is still amongst the best in the world surely? 18% aren’t convinced by either of them and 17% voted that Gabby was much better. That left 7% saying Owen was much better
