Martin O’Neill says that Ashley Young deserved his Premiership player of the month award. ‘Stiliyan Petrov had a terrific month. Ashley was very eye-catching but he also does a lot of work and I think he deserved it. He has been really brilliant, but we have one or two players who would have been in contention. With it being for the month of September they wouldn`t have taken into consideration our Chelsea performance.’ He also joked that Ashley Young dedicating his award to the manager should guarantee him a place in the team at the weekend!

Ashley Young, you really do spoil us! The winger says the team are looking to reward the fans with a win this Saturday. I bloody hope so, I’m taking my nephew, it is his 12th birthday, and I don’t think he’s ever seen us win! Ash told the official site that the team know they’ve got to bounce back from the Chelsea defeat and says the fans play a crucial role. ‘The atmosphere at Villa Park has been amazing this season and the fans have really got behind us.
