Gavin McCann is in a race to be fit for the home game against Manchester United next Saturday after picking up a hamstring strain in the match against dirty dirty Bolton. O’Neill said: ‘Gavin got a very tight hamstring. We’ll see what it’s like and it hasn’t gone, but it’s very tight and he was complaining about it eight or nine minutes before half-time. There was no point taking any chances because we don’t have the required squad.’
Tickets for the home games against Watford (Jan 20) and West Ham (Feb 3) are now on sale.
Martin O’Neill praised Craig Gardner for his second half sub appearance against Dirty Dirty Bolton. ‘Craig’s a decent player; he dominates a lot of reserve games. Many people may have thought – including myself – that he may have got a chance earlier. I thought about it and then he hurt his shoulder. But players have been doing OK. I thought it was an excellent introduction from him. Maybe he’s feeling pretty down about that chance just after half-time. I was telling him to calm down – he fired one out to Gabby and it nearly hit me! But outside of that he was really excellent.’

Former Villa player Steve Stone has decided to hang up his boots at the age of 35 after Leeds United terminated his contract by mutual consent. Stone joined Villa in 1999 from Nottingham Forest and stayed until 2002 when he moved to Portsmouth. So, one more time: He’s got no hair and we don’t care, Stevie Stevie Stone!

Villa defender Martin Laursen has told viasatsport.com, of which I’m a regular reader 😉 that his recuperation from his latest injury set back is going well and he is eager to prove his worth once he is back and fit. ‘It’s going excellently. It’s been five weeks out of the expected three months, but things are in order and I am quite optimistic.’
