According to Vital Bristol City, 18 year old defender Christian Ribeiro is being targeted by Premiership clubs Aston Villa and Everton. How strange, yesterday reports were suggesting that the reports linking Luke Moore with a loan move to West Bromwich Albion was nothing but speculation. Today the official site has confirmed that the 22-year-old Villa forward is having a medical at the Hawthorns.
Gareth Barry has joined in the praise for Villa striker Marlon Harewood. He told the official site after the former West Ham man’s Newcastle performance: ‘Marlon deserves a lot of credit – probably more than he got – because he pumped the players at half-time in the dressing room and got the crowd going. His workrate lifted everyone, and I’m sure John with his goals appreciated all the work Marlon did for him. Marlon was half-thinking he might have started against Newcastle with Gabby being out, but he had to wait until half-time. You could tell he was desperate to prove a point, and I think he did and he’s now in the manager’s mind. Marlon’s been an asset all season – he’s kept working hard and he’s had to remain patient. But he’s been around the game long enough to know you have to do that sometimes.’

Here we go again, a managers spot might be in jeopardy so who do the papers link to the job? Yup, our very own Martin O’Neill. According to the press Rafa Benitez only has a couple of weeks to save his job after falling foul of the new owners and also falling way short – once again – of the Premier League race. According to the Mirror today, Martin O’Neill is ‘a real contender’ for the job. They also claim Jose Mourinho and Frank Rijkaard are on the list of possible replacements. Surely Mourinho would make more sense as he is still out of work since leaving (cough) Chelsea in the summer. The only worrying thing for us is that MON is on a rolling contract so possibly could consider other moves if he wanted.
Villa, quite rightly, haven’t commented on the MON link to Liverpool but the Times have a quote from Randy Lerner who says there is no need for him to leave as he can ‘accomplish anything he wants to here.’ Not a new quote, but a good one I’m sure you’ll agree!
With Villa in with a fantastic chance of European football next season, Martin Laursen has praised the boss further. Speaking on the official site the Dane has pointed out that the team do have the mental strength to see the season through and that it’s all down to Martin O’Neill. ‘He’s definitely a winner. I think he’s got problems with himself when we’re losing and he doesn’t like that. He wants to do well and he’s got big dreams for this club and we feel that. That’s why we’re responding so well when we go a goal behind, that we come again and are able to come back and get a point or three points because our leader is a good example to follow. The Barclays Premier Reserve League game against Chelsea, postponed this week due to a freezing pitch, has been re-scheduled and will now be played at Brentford FC on Monday April 21.
Ashley Young has been talking to the official site complimenting the strikers for taking the chances he creates….which is nice. The 22-year-old winger told avfc.co.uk: ‘I’ve set up quite a few goals and that’s a credit to the players getting on the end of the crosses and the free-kicks. It’s not only John Carew and Gabby; it’s the players coming up from the back, Zat, Curtis, Olof and of course Martin Laursen. For me to put in a ball and somebody gets on the end of it, that’s a great feeling. To come off the pitch at the end of the game and think I’ve contributed to three points is even better. It’s nice to score a few goals, but it’s important to be the one that’s setting up other people’s goals. I’m in the team to do a job.
