Manager Steve Bruce has again been speaking about Australian international midfielder Mile Jedinak and how he believes his future will be at centre half. Having added some defensive strength to our midfield and more than received the plaudits for it, Jedinak has been deployed at the back recently in games against Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic alongside James Chester, and the Birmingham Mail carried these quotes about Jedinak on Saturday morning. Manager Steve Bruce was speaking ahead of the weekend’s clash with Wigan Athletic and as well as praising owner Dr Tony Xia for his support, Bruce admitted failure simply wasn’t an option for him at Aston Villa. With Play Off hopes boosted with our recent victories and clean sheets, it’s still going to be a tough ask this year, and Bruce more than acknowledges we may have given ourselves too much to do, but there are certainly green shoots to cling onto once more. Speaking to the BBC’s Football Focus programme, Bruce joked that ultimately failure would lead to ‘off with my big fat head’ but he was determined that wouldn’t be the case. Corey Blackett-Taylor has been speaking of his delight at being on the first team bench for Aston Villa’s last two games against Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town. The 19 year old winger was introduced to first team affairs back in the days of Tim Sherwood, training regularly with the squad and being in the match day 18 for the League Cup tie at Villa Park against Notts County back in August 2015, but the Huddersfield match the other week saw him debut under Steve Bruce as a late substitute in the game and our current injury situation saw him on the bench once more for the victory over Sheffield Wednesday. Jedinak, Jedinak, in the middle, or at the back.. It was back to winning ways for Villa as they passed their test against the much fancied Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday. It looked pretty comfortable by the end but a disallowed off-side goal, a close penalty call and the luxury of playing against ten men, suggested that the Wednesday fans would have seen it rather differently. Even so, there was very little doubt about the lunge which led to the sending-off. Surprise and amazement at Steve Bruce’s substitution choices turned to pleasure and amusement as the decision to replace the injured Baker with Alan Hutton and move Jedinak to centre-back, proved to be a game changer, as Hutton brought drive to the midfield and Jedinak looked more than comfortable in defence. Two nice goals from Jonathan Kodjia took him to seventeen goals for the season and we can only wonder at how many he would have by now, if his Villa season hadn’t been interrupted by the African Cup of Nations.
