Unoial Villa News…

Curtis Davies says that Stewart Downing will prove to be a ‘top drawer’ addition for Villa. He said on AVTV: ‘He’s obviously a top player, an England international who has been in the squad regularly under Capello as well as McClaren. He’s a great signing. He can play anywhere across the middle and also he gives us that edge so that when Gareth left we’d got a top quality player coming in. I don’t think he can play for a few months but I’m sure when he comes in he will be top drawer.’

Martin O’Neill spoke after the Colchester 2-2 pre-season telling the official site that the game gave Villa a ‘good work out’ and said our team showed spirit coming from behind admitting that we conceded two poor goals. Seems from the match reports and comments from those who have been to the two friendlies that there is much work to be done on defence still. ‘As for the senior players it was another game so quickly and trying to prepare ourselves for the Peace Cup and obviously in a month’s time to get that sort of fitness and determination that we need for the Premier League.’ He also pinpointed youth players Marc Albrighton and Andreas Weimann as playing well.

The ever excellent Glensider away match report. Actually, I shouldn’t say he is excellent, he might want paying… hmmm. The ever disappointing away match report by Glensider (phew, that is better, save me a fortune that.. top work JF… stop talking to yourself JF… NURSE) : Glensider At Colchester

One report claims that Arsene Wenger will allow Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos to leave and Villa are being linked. I remember at the start of the transfer there was a link for the player who was on loan at AC Milan last season but it all seemed to go quiet with some quotes that Arsenal didn’t want to let him go. Wenger said: ‘He has offers and it is open. He has come back here with us still looking for solutions but he is still yet to decide on his future.’ Because of my dedication to the cause, I can’t be bothered to dig out the original link!

Martin O’Neill has explained why Luke Young hasn’t featured in pre-season yet. The Villa boss explained: ‘He has a problem with the top of his thigh. I thought he would be fit. He did a wee bit on Monday morning, felt it again. I don’t think it is anything to be overly concerned about. Certainly the medical staff are not overly concerned. He may not be fit for Saturday evening but he will have every possibility for the second game.’ Luke will be flying out with the rest of the team to Spain for the Peace Cup.

MON also confirmed that the guys who joined late following international action have now trained and will also be going to Spain. That list included, John Carew, Emile Heskey, Ashley Young, Stiliyan Petrov and also Moustapha Salifou who I thought was out of contract now, maybe there was another year option on him? Brad Guzan returns today. James Milner, Gabby Agbonlahor and Craig Gardner are getting an extra rest following their England U21 exploits and will join pre-season later.

Only other bit of gossip since the transfer article earlier is that Portsmouth are apparently not willing to sell their defender Sylvain Distin and now their takeover has happened, I guess they’ll be in no need to sell assets like they were close to being forced to do.
