It was being reported yesterday that midfielder Gary Gardner was a fresh target for Nottingham Forest. Like the reported interest from Sunderland in Ross McCormack and Tommy Elphick with the expectation that having been left out of the Germany tour squad Sunderland would now firm up their interest having made enquiries, the thrust of the Gardner speculation follows the same lines. It was being reported yesterday that striker Jonathan Kodjia was due to report back to Bodymoor Heath as he continues to step up his recovery from a broken ankle. Having suffered the break in the penultimate game of the campaign against Blackburn Rovers and sadly putting an end to his hopes of being the first player to 20 goals in a campaign since Peter Withe, it was first feared he might be out of action until the autumn, but with successful surgery and diligent hard work over the summer he’s well ahead of track and it’s said club medics remains quietly confident that he could be in a good shape to play at least some part of our Championship opener against Hull City on August 5. Aston Villa have bolstered our youth academy with the signing of Dutch youngster Colin Odutayo from Belgian side Genk. The 16 year old Netherlands youth international put pen to paper on a deal at Villa Park yesterday, and the Birmingham Mail report that having been highly rated in the Genk youth set up for a number of years, he took another step forward by being called into the Dutch Under 15 side for practice matches against Serbia last April. With centre half Tommy Elphick linked with a move to Sunderland the other week, it’s now being suggested that Ross McCormack is a target as well. Both players are deemed to be surplus to requirements with recent strengthening putting Elphick’s future in doubt, and McCormack and ‘gate gate’ still go hand in hand when it comes to his future. A short time ago tonight, Aston Villa announced the signing of free agent Chris Samba. Former Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers defender Samba had been without a club having left Greek side Panathinaikos in January 2017 and he of course joined us for training on a ‘we don’t call it a trial’ basis last season.
