Kevin MacDonald’s Under 23 group got back to winning ways on Monday afternoon as we hosted Fulham at Villa Park and secured a 2-1 victory.

An own goal from Aron Davies saw us open the scoring in the 36th minute but they did draw level just after the hour mark after goalkeeper Matija Sarkic lost possession un an uncharacteristic error. Villa reacted strongly to the blow though and Jordan Cox restored our lead in minute 69 to give us the win.

It was our first outing at Villa Park this season and some will be delighted to hear that Callum O’Hare continued his return to fitness after injury and led the breakaway move that saw Jordan Lyden’s cross deflect in off their player. He also got a first 90 minutes into his tank in a competitive game since last May.

Dominic Revan fired in for Cox’s winner and we also welcomed Under 18 fullback Jake Walker to the group as James Bree was missing with one eye on Tuesday night changes as we face Burton Albion in the second round of the EFL Cup.

It’s the Riverside Stadium on Sunday where we face Middlesbrough, before returning to VP on September 14 for a semi-local derby against Stoke City.

Aston Villa:

Sarkic, Walker (Cox), Revan, Bedeau, Bazeley-Graham, Lyden, Doyle-Hayes, Clarke, O’Hare, Knibbs (Odutayo), Mooney (Prosser).

Unused subs:

Lomax (GK), Rowe.
