Martin O’Neill has indicated just how crucial the Intertoto Cup games against Odense BK at Villa Park on Saturday is by stressing how much easier it will be for him to attract the right players to Villa if we are in the UEFA Cup.
Our last poll asked ‘what are Villa most likely to make most of their signings’ and 59% agreed with the Villa boss saying once Uefa qualification is confirmed. So there, we aren’t just pretty faces us lot are we?!
O’Neill told the official site: ‘I think that players, particularly players coming from abroad, want to play in the Premier League and there’s only so many teams who can be in Europe each year. But if we could say to prospective signings that we were in the UEFA Cup it certainly wouldn’t hinder our chances.’
He also says he is looking forward to the game and thinks the 2-2 draw gave the Villa a great chance adding, ‘This is what we played for all last season. We finished sixth in the league and normally that would be good enough to go into the UEFA Cup automatically. It wasn’t and we ended up taking this route, so we have to get on with it.’
