Vital Villa Summer 2011 Interviews: SE5 Villain

How do you do one I hear you cry? Click here and find out! YOUR TURN: The Vital Villa Interviews..

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

Probably an odd answer but I was born in South East London but moved to Kent when 2yrs old. I was at a school where the closest team was Gillingham and so should really have been a mainstay within Priestfields Stadium. However within my primary school I, as many kids, loved footie but all my classmates supported one of the so called ‘big 4` I floated adrift until a certain Dean Saunders made the switch from Liverpool to Villa.

I was about 9 and suddenly saw a chance to follow a team that no-one else did. My support began there and following a little research into this wonderful team I soon realised that in the year of my birth (1982) Villa were crowned League Champions, European Cup Winners (a week before my birth) and European Super Cup Winners. From that discovery it was set in stone and meant to be. I became and ardent Villain.

2) Alex McLeish? Your opinion please?

I originally viewed the appointment with a little unjustified trepidation. Reading many blogs on his statistics (particularly his slight and the obvious Blue background I was fearful. However I thought back to when the Blues appointed him and I vaguely remember thinking that they had done well for themselves. Honestly I think I am coming round to the idea but the jury is still out. Not wanting to sit on the fence I am more than prepared to give the man a chance, and so far so good, Given and N`Zogbia are exactly the signings we needed. He seems prudent in the transfer market making two great value signings and has obviously taken heed of Mr Lerner`s warnings over wages unlike some predecessors… We are only at pre-season stage and so his first 11 are only starting to take shape, results will obviously determine more my mood/opinion of the man, but with a ridiculously nice fixture list, up to Christmas, if we are not in the top 6 by then, then we will be in trouble by the end. All going well this is a season with great potential, easiest fixture list up to Christmas, could lead to some financial backing in January and a real push for Europe (dreaming…)

3) Best and worst moments of last season?

Worst: My fiancées brother is a huge football fan and a huge Newcastle fan at that… need I say more – his 25th text of that day read “you will never live this down, you cant ignore me forever”

Best: Last game of the season, not only going into it with a win over Arsenal but to beat Liverpool, see Brum go down and us leapfrog Newcastle for the first time in the season, to win a £20 bet with said fiancées Brother… good day!

4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner?

Astute businessman but clear Villa Fan. His heart and mind seem to work well together to give passion without recklessness. If I had to pick a fault it would be the length of time it takes to wrap up transfers, possibly not his fault, possibly down to the press, but from the moment we first hear a sniff of a signing until I actually see them in a Villa shirt – no matter how scared they look (N`Zogbia) – it seems to take forever. Perhaps I am just too excitable and it makes time drag checking blogs every 5 minutes.

5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?

I think we have the makings of a decent starting 11 now. We have an abundance of good midfield players which is encouraging, I hope we don’t lose Cuellar as he is a quality CB (he is not a RB please god play him in his best role) but we need strength in Wing back positions. RB LB, if Heskey goes then another striker is needed but that only looks 50/50 now. Talk of Warnock going and if so we need to jump on Enrique at Newcastle – he is immense!

6) (changed question!) Stewart Downing, now he has gone, were Villa right to get shot of him or should they have kept him against his wishes?

D is for Downing D is for Disappointment. The guy is clearly a good footballer, but he is also clearly easily led by an agent looking for a pay cheque. How can you have a complete change of direction between April and May, on moment you want to ‘repay Villa`s faith when being injured` to handing in a transfer request. Honestly if you don’t want to play for us then seeya later mate! £20m is an awesome fee for only a ‘good` player, to then buy a player who is younger, better, fitter, stronger (daft punk) cheaper… no brainer. Bye bye Downing, Hello N`zog.

7) Favourite current player?

I play football as a striker and so Darren Bent would be an obvious choice, and I admire his talent greatly but also as a striker I recognize a quality keeper when I see one and I have to say that although he has only turned out 3 times for Villa, and only in Pre-season friendlies, I am very excited about having Shay Given at the club and feel that a 5yr contract is plenty enough for him to become a massive Holte End hero

8) Favourite all time player/s?

Yet to read his autobiography yet but has to be Paul Mcgrath, life blood of the team when I began supporting aged 9 and is a massive hero to me, had so many recommendations to read his book and really must get round to picking it up.

9) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

Premier: Depending on Start I think we can push for Europe if we are backed in January. I would say optimistic 6th but realistic 8th/9th…
FA Cup: if we get drawn Man Utd in the 3rd round then that will be it…. if not then quarters or poss semi`s….
Carling: Draw depending we could have a little run perhaps, been there or there about for the last few years…

10) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?

Q: Can I have a free season ticket in the Holte End, each year, for the rest of my life, paid for by Stuart Downing as a token of faith I put in him by paying to watch Villa and funding his transfer whilst he was injured.

A: oh Yes (in the voice of Churchill the nodding dog)

11) Right, lets lower the tone… which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

Without wanting to be hung, drawn and quartered for high treason I wont risk saying i`d like to bang the newest Princess (a Villa fan nonetheless) so I will plump for her sister Pippa!

Most like to thump? hmmm… Probably an uncommon choice but Jenson Button, I think the little rat faced cheese monster is a complete Thrush.. no idea why, just annoys me… I`ll justify it by guessing he is a blue nose….
