Who is under threat?

Baines is inexperienced and did little to enhance his chances against Mexico really, so it is a straight battle between him and Warnock. Assuming Warnock is fit, and performs against Japan on Sunday, there is a chance that the Villa man could get in.

Dawson is inexperienced and uncapped, he is a quality defender – do not get me wrong – but this inexperience going into a world cup makes it less likely that the chance to build on this in South Africa will come along.

Although Upson has been a regular in Capello’s squads he does not often get into the side, and when he did against Brazil at the end of last year I thought he had a pretty poor game.

Who misses out?

Warnock – I still think that he is the better option than Baines, although the Everton man has been playing more recently and Warnock has had injuries and is still carrying one. Although ‘if’ he can feature against Japan on Sunday, and does a job, he will get in…

Dawson – a bridge, and step, too far for the Spurs man this time round. His time will come though.
