Wayne Routledge, who scored for Villa in their pre-season friendly against FC Wil 1900 the other night, says he is looking to make an impact this season at Villa Park in order to earn himself a new contract.

Following on from comments by his former Chairman, Simon ‘the tanned big mouth’ Jordan at Crystal Palace who claimed the wingers career had gone downhill since he moved to Spurs and subsequently Villa, the 23-year-old says he is happy with his move and that he is at a big club and has much to do to prove himself.

‘This is a massive season for me, and the team. I have got a lot to prove. While the team finished sixth last year, we feel we can do better so hopefully we can push on. I’ve got one year left on my contract. I am looking to play and hopefully get myself a new contract here because I want to crack on with my career. I would not have come here if I didn’t think I could get involved in the team.’

Adding, ‘I aim to prove I am good enough to play for the team and to try and improve the team. I feel I can do that. I feel I am part of the set-up here. It helps knowing a few of the boys from England under-21s and I also knew Zat Knight and Nigel Reo-Coker from a while back. That has helped me settle in and now I want to push on.’

Looking forward to seeing Routledge fully up to speed and bombing down the wings, I’m sure Martin O’Neill and the coaches here can get the best of him, could prove a very worthwhile million pound investment!
