The Birmingham Mail says that Martin O’Neill tried but failed in a late bid for former Liverpool full-back John Arne-Riise who instead moved to Roma.

Former Villa midfielder Steven Davis could be on the move to Scottish giants Rangers but only if they match the £4million that Fulham paid us last summer.

Lisa Smith of the Post has an exclusive today claiming that Villa and Chelsea have finally agreed a £5.5million fee for Steve Sidwell. It was widely – and most inaccurately – reported last week that a fee had been agreed. The report claims that Sidwell wants to talk to new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari first before deciding on any move. Full article: Chelsea Midfielder Deal Edging Closer?

The Post are also suggesting that Villa are ‘front runners’ for the signing of Everton striker Andy Johnson. I don’t believe this one at all, I am 99% sure he isn’t a target. (You watch, we’ll sign him tomorrow!) The former Blues player told reporters recently he would only consider a move to London if he was to leave Goodison Park. :o) There you go, we are all happy! West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is said to be interested.

Portsmouth have seen a bid for Peter Crouch rejected and Harry Redknapp is suggesting he might move on to other targets as he considers what Liverpool want too high. Apparently Villa and Newcastle are also interested in the England international striker. Redknapp said in the Portsmouth News: ‘I’d love to bring Crouchie back here…But the fee seems a bit too high, and at the end of the day it comes down to the price. It seems like things are getting a bit too expensive. Crouchie is a player who is on our list, but if nothing can be done then we will just move on to the next player.’

Other reports are saying that Villa are to hold talks with Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson this week. Think those claims will deserve a separate article!
