Former England, Blackburn, Chelsea and Celtic striker (one team missing here, hmmm, no can’t think!) Chris Sutton has signed for Aston Villa in a deal keeping him at Villa Park until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old will join back up with Martin O’Neill who were together at Celtic where Sutton scored 86 goals in 185 games.

Sutton provides cover following the aggravated shoulder injury to Luke Moore.

  • Poor signing. Don’t agree with MON on this one. I’ve never liked the guy and never rated him. I like him even less after his association with Small Heath

  • Would rather have kept Phillips but if Martin O’Neill wants him and can get the best out of him (and lets face it, O’Neill has a very happy habit of getting the best out of people) then I’m happy. O’Neill hasn’t put a foot wrong yet and we do desperately

  • Its not a great signing but if Martin knows how to get the best out of him i suppose its worth a try. 86 goals in 185 games is good but dont forget that is in the scottish prem!

  • my blue-nosed colleague just told me that the blues never really regarded him as one of them, he went on that bruce could never get the best out of him. something mon will be able to do. good experience for the younglings to learn from to.

  • I agree with the Fear. Sutton is also someone who knows where the net is at VP. I remember the goal last season for the dildo salesmen from Small Heath and also a hat trick he scored for Blackburn. However I think he is more as cover for JPA than Luke Moo

  • With Moore injured and Phillips gone, it left us very short so as a short term move, then it’s a good signing. If he has shed a bit of weight and in shape then he can be a nuisance and can hold the ball up well. I think he’ll get stuck in and although his

  • What’s the risk here? Or am I missing something? He’s quality, if he does a Sherringham or Solskjaer (this season) – what a bonus. We have zero muscle up front to tough it out.

  • Im not keen on ex small heath rejects but I am even more opposed to ruining the good vibe we have waited so long for at VP. For this and this alone lets get behind him and laugh at your blue nose mates when he bangs in more than the one he got for them. U

  • its not a bad signing we do need a strong foward he will be good cover and could get a couple of goals

  • we need to get past this blues to villa thing. if a player can do a job for us then it doesn’t really matter where he’s been before. if rooney had started at man city, fergie still would have wanted to sign him. not comparing rooney to sutton, but the poi

  • Regardless of Sutton’s success or failure with us, we should back MON in what ever he does. Those of us who are old enough, remember that not every Ron Saunders signing was a success. He was always making progress though!!! As RL said “you don’t mess with

  • Would prefer to have kept Phillips but we’ve got to back him as we have nothing to moan about him for yet! Yes, he appeared for the Blues but you wouldn’t say “Chris Sutton” and think Birmingham would you?! So lets give him a chance. Remeber the bigger ou

  • I think it’s a good signing for may reasons that I shan’t bore you with but I have a problem with his attitude. I’ve never really forgiven him for his England snub, acting like a spoiled baby but hopefulll he has regretted that decision (which ended his

  • GAH… three ex celtic players GAH I TELLS YOU!…oh well it’s a transitional period and agathe and sutton are freebies, cannot argue to be honest 🙂

  • At the end of the day he is past it and is only here as extreme cover incase 2 of Baros, Gabby and JPA get injured at the same time. Hopefully that will never happen and Sutton won’t feature much for us at all.

  • Absolutely spot on Beovilla. It’s annoying to see the negativity from some of these posts, it’s understandable as I think we are all still in the “glass is half empty” mode from last season. I don’t buy this cr** that our squad is a load of world beaters

  • Good point tarzan. MON certainly has a track record of getting the best out of older players. Anyone who can get Emile Heskey to score goals is worth trusting IMO!

  • And who cares if he’s played for the noses?! He was only there a few months and he’s hardly got the crest tattooed on his arm has he?!

  • MON obviously saw the need for an extra striker with Lukey out of action and our options very thin.

    The transfer window is closed.

There were very few options open to MON and at least he knows the guy.

I would imagine that he will spend a lot of

  • Agreed Doug. He only played 10 games for them! And he got them relegated! That makes him a legend already

  • one word for this 2@ ! *****. Ex bluenose, overpaid and unfit. Nice one Martin. Youve been perfect so far, now this is just silly. Give Sam Williams his chance

  • A mixed reaction as expected, and a healthy debate, me I trust MON to know what he is doing, and if anyone knows Sutton it should be him. BUT I would like to put a call out to the boo boys, lets welcome Sutton with cheers and applause, the way a player is

  • give him a chance…scores 10 goals between now and january itll be a cracking bit of business!!

  • To score 10 goals in that time would be going some, seeing as the current top scorers have scored 2 each in 6 weeks! He’s there to provide backup, and as a target man he’ll do it competently. If he were to score 5 or 6 by January then that’ll be a bonus i

  • ******* good bonus, we should wait and see before making a judgement in my opinion 🙂

  • He also has the added benefit of being able to do a job in midfield or just behind the front two, which he did for Celtic on numerous occaisons. And I believe he has played at centre half too, although I think we’re well covered there. Even if MON wants h

  • Teddy Sheringham won the treble with Man U aged 33 when most people thought best days were behind him. Sutton is also 33. You got to give the bloke a chance.

  • he’ll do no more that provide you with cover – don’t expect to see him delivering any spectacular – over-rated – Shearer made him look good… on top of that he is a self-obsessed fat head. Sorry to say it lads as Martin looks like he’ll give you a good s

  • he wasn’t a ‘buy’, we also probably have the lowest wage payments in the prem, we probably have the smallest squad, and we know for a fact that doug didnt like paying huge wages, i cant see him being paid much more than 10-15k a week so he’s probably cost

  • Give him a chance, how many journeymen have you seen Martin O’neill sign in the past and turned them into good players.
I thought you Villa fans would like him he helped get the Brum relegated!!!

  • This should generate a bit more discussion methinks: “Ex-Liverpool striker Stan Collymore is desperate to launch his football comeback at former club Aston Villa. (Daily Mirror)” Oh my Gawd

  • Yeah thats the second time his agent has tried to fabricate a link with the villa out of thin air. Stan’s a complete tw*t if he thinks he’s coming back to the villa from the wilderness. He’s just had a sniff of Lerner’s money and wants to be depressed o

  • collymore…sorry mate, i hear Stafford Rangers would like you, however you will have to play for £50 a week….is that ok? thought not… you use £50 notes to light cigars i forgot…
