Ciaran Clark has said he has learnt plenty from Richard Dunne, and not only does he believe he’ll get a fresh start under McLeish, he also believes that he’ll be able to rediscover his form, after shall we say, a rather underpar season under Houllier.

Speaking to the E&S the highly rated 21 year old said that playing alongside quality like Dunne, Collins and Cuellar, had made a positive difference to his game, and especially alongside Dunne, he always talks during a match – giving advice, geeing players up – and Clark has been grateful for that.

‘Richard is brilliant, by training and playing alongside them, you can learn so much. I definitely have done over the past few seasons and hopefully I will do for the seasons to come. Richard does speak to you a lot on the pitch and is always there to help you out. He will try to guide you in the right way, which is what you want as a young lad, he’s been great for me.’

For many last season Dunney and Collins’ performances on the pitch, as well as incidents off it, mean they would already like to see Clark starting.

Whilst I’m not in the camp that believes we should off load them both just yet, I am however in the camp that hopes Clarkie’s development isn’t held back.

He’s not the finished product yet and he’s still going to make mistakes that he’ll kick himself for, but I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t at least find himself starting 50% of our games this season.

He’s quite capable of giving us the next 15 years of his career, the more experience he gets the better player he’ll become and you could argue those ahead of him have already peaked.
