Following the embarrassing and shambolic 4-1 defeat to Sheffield United at the weekend, talk of a return for John Terry to Aston Villa is doing the rounds again.
With no clear move for a defender made in sensible time ahead of the transfer window closing, and even Steve Bruce admitting that a deal for Harold Moukoudi felt unlikely to come off after he flew into the club for talks, there was a supposed loan move made for Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna but that was reportedly quickly knocked back owing to the late stage of our approach.
It’s fair to say that having let Tommy Elphick out on loan for some unfathomable reason, defensively our transfer window was as shambolic as the last match.
With Villa still able to add free agents, John Terry is an incredibly easy go-to given his spell with us last season.
@TheVillaView_ @HeartOfTheHolte @oldmansaid @villareport @danbardell The poll read “Do you think if John Terry was asked to come back for one more season, he would” and JT himself voted Yes. Really hope we bring him back. #UTV #AVFC #VTID pic.twitter.com/Wuh9QS2HFE

One thing's for sure, we never would have lost to Sheffield United in the way we did if Terry was in our team

When Chelsea let Terry go last season, they had a huge hole left in their dressing room… Get the feeling we have this now too #AVFC #BringHimHome

If @AVFCOfficial aren’t trying to get John Terry back then it’s criminal. We have a severe shortage of centre backs, a joke of a defence, and Terry is sat there without a club. Get him back! ???? #AVFC

Personally think we miss Terry more than we ever thought we would. Not only his actual presence on the pitch but I feel he had a major role in getting the boys motivated. Something we have definitely been lacking since he left.

Whether Terry was having some fun with the above-referenced poll or not, if he returned this time around it would have to be on a different deal as any gains made on a Financial Fair Play front would likely be lost if he walked back in on his deal last season, but we need to do something as Mile Jedinak is not a centre-half and despite doing his best and putting in some strong showings, whilst the defeat can’t be laid solely at his feet, last weekend showed the position is not natural and he shouldn’t be plugging that gap regularly.
It’s not fair on him.
