This was the point of the season the vast majority of fans weren’t looking forward to – the first pointless and totally irrelevant international break of the year during an ongoing pandemic – but Aston Villa Academy graduate Carney Chukwuemeka has given us something to cheer about.

With with ongoing ‘handbags’ with the seemingly classless Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni who is denying knowledge of the agreement struck allowing Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia to travel (he’s doing the same to Tottenham Hotspur as well), and more anger in the fanbase following Tyrone Mings’ England involvement despite not being fit enough to play for us in the last one, Carney has given us some welcome relief here.

Having been called into the England Under 19 group this window, the 17-year-old midfielder made his debut for them on Thursday afternoon as they welcomed Italy to St George’s Park in a friendly.

Proper details of the game are sadly lacking but with what I assume were all 90 minutes under his belt, Carney was also sporting the skipper’s armband on the day and somewhat predictably, helped himself to his first assist at that level – securing a 2-0 victory.

He now travels, along with teammates Filip Marschall and Aaron Ramsey, to Germany for the game against them on Monday afternoon.
