Steven Davis is looking to his Northern Ireland international duties to give him a shot in the arm as he looks to re-gain some Premiership form.

The Villa midfielder admits this hasn’t been the best of seasons for him but he is working hard at putting that right.

‘Things haven’t gone as well at Villa for me this season, but I am working hard to get back into the team. Hopefully a good performance for Northern Ireland will help my confidence for when I go back to my club. I haven’t scored in a while and I think I am due one. It would be nice if it was to come against Wales because I remember how good it felt to score against them the last time.’

Davis, who lines up with Aaron Hughes who will captain the side, added: ‘Aaron has dropped out of the team in the last few weeks, but it won’t be long before he is back to the player that he was. He has a lot of experience for someone quite young and has over 50 caps now. As a captain he leads by example and helps younger players settle in. I know when I came into the squad Aaron was a great influence for me. He is versatile too. He’s done well for Aston Villa at right-back and has been great at centre-half for Northern Ireland.’

‘The new manager has come in with new ideas and it has taken a while for everyone to adjust. I have no doubt that Aaron is a Premiership quality player and he won’t be out of the team for long.’

Hughes was linked to a move back to Newcastle United; but with the versatility he has across all positions in defence, he is surely a more than capable squad member for Villa?
