It’s stupid at this time of the season to say this is a must win game, but I’m going to say it anyway. Villa HAVE to get a home win against Fulham on Saturday, these are the sort of teams we’ve got to get the points against as we are still a long way off the ‘big’ clubs. These are the games where our chances of making the Uefa Cup next year will be won and lost through the season.

Vital Quotes:

Martin O’Neill said: ‘The onus is definitely on the home side to go and break the away team down. I heard from various people at Newcastle that it was quite refreshing to see an away side try to come and win the game. I was delighted to hear that because some people just go away from home and shut up shop. There is an excitement and zest about the side which will stand us in good stead.’

He also says of the Fulham new boys: ‘Steven (Davis) and Aaron (Hughes) are two terrific lads, make no mistake about that. I would have preferred Steven to stay but I couldn’t guarantee him that he would play in the position he wanted every single week. Aaron was never unhappy here but with knowing Lawrie very well he thought it was an opportunity that he couldn’t waste. They are two terrific lads and I obviously wish them all the best.’

Fulham Team News:

Match Prediction:

Mystic Mug
has polished his balls and is totally happy to predict a 2-0 thriller at Villa with the home team getting their first win of the season.

Mark Lawrenson predicts 2-1 to Villa saying on the BBC site: ‘Villa really should have come away from Newcastle with a win last week but they found Magpies goalkeeper Steve Harper in really good form. I know Martin O’Neill is still looking to improve the squad, so I expect them to get better as the season wears on. There are big question marks hanging over the Fulham side on the road.’

  • I think its worth a trip down from London for £15 in the North Stand to find out.
    3-1 to the Villa

  • A ‘must win’ game only three games into the season? We sure do put pressure on ourselves, but that is football today. Ask Martin Jol. We do need a win though to get us up and running, especially with Chelski next week.
We must not fall into the trap of thinking we have a ‘right’ to win these games. We have to earn that right. I think Sanchez had made some good signings at Fulham and they will be very difficult to beat. I am confident that we will win, I’ll go for 2-0, and then when we sign three or four players next week everything will be rosy in the garden again! (Albion can get stuffed wanting that sort of money for Davies. much better value to be had elsewhere,German centre half on Wednesday, and it will leave them with a very unhappy player)

  • Didnt realise until I looked at text last night but we have drawn the last 5 games against Fulham! Surely cant be 6 on the trot?

  • yes we should win, stranger things have happened – these are the kind of games last season that we drew. Lets see if there are any differences this time around. Davis is very lightweight in midfield i would kick him all over the park. NRC will do this job correctly FACT!

  • Gonna push the boat out here, Fullham look weak defensively on the road, can’t take the pressure. Gonna be a hammering me thinks 4-0 Villa maybe 4-1.

  • Unlike astonmilan I still have serious concerns as to who will score the goals for us, however we absolutely have to pick up the three points on offer just to get this show on the road.

  • To balance things out a little, my houseguest for the weekend, Fulham season ticket holder, predicts 2-0 for The Cottagers. Dont worry, I’ll make sure he and his wife have no hot water to shower tomorrow a.m.

  • comin from belfast…cant c why mon sold davies, much better than petrov…personally i think petrovs got half a season 2prove himself…but iv seen davies play for his country and hes outstanding, regret sellin him!
