Vital Villan Mid Season Interview: Jonah

The brain’s and looks of Vital Villa, none other than Jonah takes our mid-season interview!

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

I never had any option, not that I’m complaining. My dad was a villa fan as was his dad before him. Funny to think now that my grandad was probably going down the villa in the 19th century and probably witnessed the birth of it all. My dad first took me down to villa park when I was three, I naturally have very vague memories of it all. The only thing I could remember for years was that it was against Blackpool, I looked it up recently and it was a 1-1 draw, McParland scored for villa and Stanley Mathews was playing for Blackpool.

I actually spoke to Peter McParland outside the trinity road stand early in the season. I said to him, “Peter, my first ever game was 1958, Villa v Blackpool, 1-1 and you scored”. He replied “Yes, I know”. What a smashing old boy he is.

2) What do you think of this season, do we have the chance to push on or will we slip up like last season?

It’s going OK so far. A couple of bad results over Christmas have taken the edge of it league wise, though we were bloody unlucky against Liverpool I thought. Still concerned about the lack of goals coming from our strikers, but I can’t see us falling away like we did last season. Spurs and Man City have vastly improved this season so we might just have to settle for 6th spot or thereabouts again whilst actually doing better in terms of results on last year.

3) Best moment/s of this season so far?

Last Wednesday night (obviously). Talk about mixed emotions though after we went 2 down. I have never known a game like that and doubt if I ever will in my lifetime, though I would settle for a 6-4 win in the final J

4) Worst moment/moments of this season so far?

Wigan at home. We were absolutely awaful and MON made it worse with his criticism of the fans, trying to make it it was all about that one game, when we all know it was due to the continuation of the dross we had been watching since half way through last season.

5) Do you expect any arrivals this January (bearing in mind MON has indicated not) and IF you could bring in a player or two, who (realistically) would you go for?

No I don’t, and I don’t blame MON for that. Quality players that would improve us just aren’t available in January. If we could bring in a player though it would have to be a striker, Darren Bent could do a good job for us I reckon.

6) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer? And do you think Villa will spend enough this summer to progress?

As above, I would like us to get a top striker, Bent maybe. I think we will have a good summer, the club is improving, it’s time to kick on and I’m sure Randy will see that and make the funds available.

7) If we made the Carling Cup final, who would you most like to face Manchester United or Manchester City?

We have done mate!!! Man U for me, we have played them in 2 finals at Wembley in my lifetime and gone into both games as massive underdogs and beaten them both times…bring ‘em on!!!

8) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

Premier League: At least 6th, would be well happy with anything higher than that.
FA Cup: We could win that with the luck of the draw.
Carling Cup: Winners

9) Your opinion on Martin O’Neill now he is mid way through his 4th season in charge?

I’ve still got VERY mixed feelings about the bloke to be honest. Some of his selections/substitutions leave me absolutely baffled and we played some bloody awful football last season in particular. Things are improvong though, Downing has been a great signing with Jimmy moving into the middle and we are actually trying to pass the ball now. We could be on the verge of great things but I will reserve judgement until we see who he brings in this summer.

10) Your opinion on Randy Lerner and his board?

I couldn’t fault them in any way. The single best thing that has happened to villa in my life time.

11) Favourite current player?

Jimmy Milner, have been an admirer of his since he was a lad at Leeds and actually wanted us to sign him when he went to Newcastle. Mark my words, that lad will go on to being an all time great at villa.

12) Favourite former player/s?

Little, Gray, Mortimer…so many really but those three stand out for me, especially Sir Brian. Andy Gray takes a lot of stick for us, but those of us who can remember him in his prime for villa will always remember him as a great player

13) Right, lets lower the tone… which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

Being an old fart it would have to be Fiona Fullerton, still a Goddess to this day. Jeremy Clarkson could do with a good kicking.

With thanks to Jonah
