Aston Villa have completed the signing of Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan.

The player comes in from Stoke City and the 33 year old has signed a two year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.25million potentially rising to £2million.

He was with the Potters for nine years and previously took in playing time with Manchester City, Bury and Sheffield Wednesday.

He also carries with him 80 Republic of Ireland caps.

Speaking to the Official Site as his signing was announced, he explained.

‘I have enjoyed happy times at Stoke City but now is the time for a new football adventure – and what a club to join in Aston Villa. We may be in the Championship but everything about this club screams Premier League – and it`s the job of the players to get us back up there.’

He added.

‘I am looking forward to working with Steve Bruce. I know he has a phenomenal record in achieving promotion to the top-flight and, having spoken to him at length, I am more than aware of how much he wants to get back there again with this great club.’

Reaction has undoubtedly been mixed. Whilst he adds experience and cover and becomes a good option for Mile Jedinak in that role in midfield, he’s hardly the name people were hoping for and with more senior signings not really working out for us in recent years fans are concerned on that score.

Whelan leaves Stoke with plenty of fans for his style of play and for his consistency so we may well have got ourselves a snip.
