I’m not saying it was a surprise but once Aston Villa reached Wembley in the Championship Play-Off Final we were always going to see somebody pop their head up again and former owner Dr Tony Xia didn’t disappoint.

Having taken his seat at the national stadium, he rather bizarrely claimed after the win that he had ‘kept his promise’ but I guess it’s always got to be about him hasn’t it. Couldn’t simply Tweet congratulations after almost putting us out of business, could he?

Reaction was predictably mixed as the fanbase remains hugely split when it comes to Xia and the meltdown we had last summer after we’d put all our eggs in the promotion basket and then had to effectively mortgage almost everything we had to keep us afloat ahead of the takeover by Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, but you can read that for yourselves though. The response from former CEO Keith Wyness pulled no punches with his one word answer and that too attracted plenty of flack as most, rightly, agreed it was hardly the time for it.

Xia is right in a sense though, his management of the club certainly ‘scarify(ied)’ me so I’ll never understand the polemic love in based on him being the centre of attention on social media but with every passing business decision by our new owners, he slips more into the background and plenty will continue to welcome that.
